dealer throws the dice, counts counterclockwise around the wall to choose the side, the player at that side throws the dice again, adds to the sum from the first throw, counts clockwise along the side, these are the first tiles to take

concealed kong not shown, melded with all tiles face down, to be revealed after finishing playing in any case, regardless of winning or not; to win, say Hu instead of Mahjong

Common fan – chows

to win, must have enough fan in winning hand; fan=patterns; Mixed Triple Chow 8 points - 3 equal chows starting anywhere using all 3 different suits


Mixed Shifted Chows 6 points - 3 chows starting anywhere shifting +1+1 using all 3 different suits; Pure Shifted Chows 16 points - 3 chows starting anywhere shifting +1+1 or +2+2 using 1 suit only

Mixed Straight 8 points - 3 chows forming 123456789 using all 3 different suits; Pure Straight 16 points - 3 chows forming 123456789 using 1 suit only

Common fan – tile types

Half Flush 6 points - all tiles are 1 suit + honours; Full Flush 24 points - all tiles are 1 suit only


All Types 6 points - has 1 or more sets of each suit, winds and dragons

Upper Four 12 points - all tiles are suit tiles 6, 7, 8, 9; Lower Four 12 points - all tiles are suit tiles 1, 2, 3, 4

reversible tiles are dots 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, bamboos 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, white dragon; they look the same upside down; Reversible Tiles 8 points - all tiles are reversible
